Decorating Children's Rooms

!±8± Decorating Children's Rooms

Without doubt the number one thing to consider when decorating a child's bedroom is how quickly they grow up. What seems like a great idea when they are toddlers can very quickly become a bad one when they're five, six, ten or fourteen years old. For example painting enormous preschool characters on a child's bedroom wall such as Bob the Builder or Dora the Explorer may look good and they may love it; however you're going to find yourself redecorating as soon as they grow out of it.

The key thing to remember is to keep it simple and to try to decorate with decoration that is easy to apply and remove.

Another good Idea to keep in mind if you do plan on painting (or you just can't resist painting a giant mural) is to only paint one wall with your chosen theme; this makes it very easy to redecorate should the opportunity arise in the future. Paint is often a really good choice for a child's bedroom and whilst magnolia may not be the most inspiring colour with children it does give you a good blank canvas and it's cheap and easy to apply. One thing to remember when you do choose paint though is that it's recommended you choose a hardwearing and washable paint. This is because sticky fingers and other things such as crayons and pens can really take their toll on cheap paints and make your hard work look shabby in no time at all; leaving you left to redecorate, again and again.

Our two year old toddler was a massive fan of Winnie the Pooh and is now currently obsessed with the 'In the Night Garden' series and 'Dora the Explorer'. We have found ourselves having to redecorate already. Fortunately we were clever in the aspect that we thought ahead.

A Winnie the Pooh character themed bedroom was originally the nursery and this was decorated with what I like to think of as props; a Winnie the Pooh lamp shade, Winnie the Pooh and Friends soft toys, Winnie the Pooh fleece blanket, and Winnie the Pooh wall stickers mounted on a simple magnolia painted wall. This gave us a blank canvas to work with; the wall stickers provided the emphasis for the decoration and were without doubt the most valuable addition. The stickers are so easy to apply, they don't leave marks on the wall and they're very easy to remove.

When you keep all of the above ideas in mind it becomes very simple to change the decoration in a child's bedroom without much effort at all. Replace all the props, the duvet cover or fleece, the lampshade, the wall stickers and hey presto you have a new character themed bedroom.

Below is our list of things recommended to decorate the ideal character themed room.

For The Basic Room:
Magnolia Paint (Blank Canvas)
Character Themed Bedspread
Character Themed Curtains
Wall Stickers
Themed Lamp Shade

Taking It That Step further:
Themed Wall Clock
Themed Fleece Blanket to Go Over Bedspread
Themed Bedroom Rug
Bean Bag or Bean Chair
Themed Soft Toy Furnishings
Themed Money Bank
Themed Towels

Themed Alarm clocks

These days it is easy to find your child's favourite character bedding and bedroom accessories.

Your Bedroom - Schmooze Or Snooze

!±8± Your Bedroom - Schmooze Or Snooze

Could your own bedroom have the same relaxing atmosphere as a hotel bedroom? It is an interesting thought, as it has always been a special treat for married couples to 'get away' from the children for a romantic weekend. This is supposing they can save enough money, and find enough time! Recently though, so many of the costs involved are increasing in price that the idea is dropping off.

It is not just the gas and the cost of a luxury room - even the local baby sitter's fees are escalating to keep up with inflation! A luxuriously relaxing master bedroom must surely add to the value of your property, so spend the few dollars it will take to create it!

Many interior designers have been touting the latest in interior design ideas: the bathroom as a haven. How about the bedroom as a haven? What is it about our bedroom that is so different from a hotel bedroom? It must be something other than the fact that it is just 'away from home'?

Let us consider some of the qualities that are desirable in the hotel bedroom. Well, of course privacy is number one; the children are not going to come crashing in the door and tell you their latest nightmare. There is often soft music playing in the background, and there are always soft lights in a hotel room - as well as some harsh ones.

The bed is always made and the linen is always clean and laundered with big fluffy tempting pillows and there is always a TV in the room. Hmm, well forget the TV - that may not induce the feeling of a haven. Especially if the home team loses! Even watching the news is supposed to be worrisome enough to produce stress hormones.

The question of a TV is debatable if you are putting armchairs in your bedroom and you may be actually planning to spend longer than usual in your bedroom. However, the general consensus would be: no TV in the bedroom. Another pointer that may be different in a hotel: you always go to bed at the same time. This togetherness is a habit that can be adopted at home.

The privacy issue can be dealt with very easily, put a locking latch on your door, and get in the habit of locking it every night as a matter of course. This will automatically help you to relax in your own bedroom and setting a relaxing tone in a room is achieved most easily and most cheaply with lights and music.

It is very easy to wire up your stereo and your soft lighting to the same switch and connect it to the switch by the door. If it seems difficult, call in an electrician. Use a dimmer switch for the main overhead light, so that it can always be kept turned to low, until you want it on 'bright'.

This way, as soon as you enter the bedroom, you will flick a switch and have soft music and gentle lighting which will help to invoke a relaxing feeling. It is always a good idea to have at least one armchair in a bedroom so you can sit and wiggle off your shoes, take a few deep breaths etc.

If you believe in the brain programming gurus, they tell us that if we walk in, relax to the same music and unwind every night in the same environment for three weeks - it will become a practiced habit. This means that as soon as you open the door and hear the music, your brain will recognize the procedure and take that action coupled with those sounds as the signal to relax. Just don't play the same music at work!

Soft lights are achieved by using a darker, warm-colored lamp shade or by exchanging your energy bulbs for pink or amber bulbs; if you want a very dim light, you can even use a night light. The decor will also add to the ambience, soft apricot being the classic relaxation color.

A final haven-helper is quite important; even if one of you likes to sleep with the window open - keep your bedroom toasty warm! It is much easier to relax when you don't have goose bumps!

Where a Good Night's Sleep Is Shore Thing - Beach Themed Bedrooms

!±8± Where a Good Night's Sleep Is Shore Thing - Beach Themed Bedrooms

A beach theme is not only a great way to create a fun and nurturing environment for your child, but it's also quite easy to do. Especially when you start with the right centerpiece - namely: the bed.

The Centerpiece of a Beach Themed Bedroom: A Custom Theme Bed

An ideal custom theme bed for a beach themed child's bedroom could be a hut or a bungalow, it could be a rowboat, a sailboat, or a yacht, it could be dolphin or a whale, it could be a sunken pirate's ship or a submarine.

Whichever of these ideas you use - or whatever others you come up with on your own - a dominant centerpiece like a custom theme bed gives you a simple and profound focal point to design the rest of the room around.

If you get a two-tier custom theme bed, then you have additional decorative options, such as using rocks (real or manmade) to suggest a cave off the shore or a grassy cliffside overlooking the horizon. You can even add a beach umbrella for a further sense of privacy and shade.

Colors for a Beach Themed Bedroom

Colors for a beach themed child's bedroom might consist of varying shades of blue - light blue for the sky, deep blue for the sea. These could comprise the base of the ceiling and/or wall colors. The deeper ocean blues could also work well for bedding.

Highlights of yellow and gold would work well in evoking the bright and warming light of the sun, moon and stars.

Beiges and tans would work wonderfully as floor colors, whether in light hardwood or wall-to-wall carpeting, or area rugs and mats, emulating the sand on the shores of your child's private beach paradise.

Furniture and Accessories for a Beach Themed Bedroom

Shells make wonderful ornaments on all sorts of furniture and accessories of a beach themed bedroom, whether as borders along the walls or borders around a mirror or picture frame or glued across the surface of a lampshade. Coral, sand glass, and starfish provide similar versatility of detail.

The element of water can be further interjected into a beach themed bedroom in a number of ways. A small aquarium of goldfish or tropical fish is a great start. But you can also provide a similar sense of floating on the sea by placing lots of pillows throughout the room, as their softness and billowiness are very suggestive of the same soothing, flowing energy of water.

Sheer fabrics, both as drapery and such as well as accenting portions of the custom theme bed creates a suggestion of a light ocean breeze as the slightest movement makes them flutter ever so lightly.

A surfboard can make a great decoration, or it can be incorporated into a piece of furniture, be it a novel bench or a door to the closet built into your child's beach themed custom bed.
